We've been using the skills and techniques that we've learned throughout the school year in order to create a design that would best showcase an inviting welcome to this year's spring open house. Earlier this week we put the final touches on our designs before submitting them for our principle, Ms. Levystein and Justus to select one as the official 2010 Spring Open House postcard, which will be the invite for the spring open house.

This week we watched a documentary called Helvetica, that encompasses views of typography, graphic design and global visual culture. This documentary introduced us into our next project, in which we will be creating an editorial design piece. Check back soon to catch the results of our project in a future blog.

Graphic Design Artist Books

Hi everyone!!

This is Jeanette an Dorotha! The graphic design class has been working diligently on our artist books for the past month. Each student has a different artist book created by themselves to convey a message about themselves. It's not a traditional book instead it's creation made by the artists' imagination. We each composed a list of adjectives that describe ourselves and our classmates, then we brainstormed ideas surrounding that list. Everyone's artist book is very interesting and each one reveals something about the artist that we did not know, or could not figure out just by looking at them. Some were as simple as modified books but others were as complex as yarn hot air balloons. The students of graphic design put a lot of hard work and effort towards expressing ourselves through these pieces of art. We also critiqued each others book's to told what we learned about that person.

Mattea

Mattea

Dorotha

Dorotha

Jeanette

Chicago Public Library Poster Contest!

http://notwhatyouthink.tumblr.com/post/489202998/imagine-design-compete-the-chipublib-org-design

Imagine. Well first to start off we learned a new method called color theory in which we use the complementary, analogous, split complementary, double complement, Three Analogous plus a Complement. We utilize these methods by creating a pattern with the focal point being either a phrase or a picture. In which we had the colors going from lightest to darkest starting from the focal point. Now, we have a new project using a combination of the color theory and some Gestalt principles. You’ll find about more about that on the next blog!!!! Until next time readers Chao!

Color it awsome

Jared Bailey

Dolores Meraz

Tim Sheppard

Hey, Team Graphic Design here to update the blog! Erica here doing a weekly update on the blog. We had a few interesting things happen this past week. A few weeks ago we started creating a poster for the Metra poster contest that will help send a positive and friendly message to all those who ride the Metra. The slogan was LOOK LISTEN LIVE, which can be interpreted in many ways as is displayed in some of our work.
Additionally, the class was introduced to our new unit and project on color theory. Through the use of a few websites, and an explanation by our wonderful teacher, Claudia, the class was able to start on a new project with a fresh eye, newly trained, to use color in interesting ways! Hopefully we’ll be able to post those projects sometime next week.

Metra Project in progress!

Hello there, this is Matt and today I'll be sharing some information
about what's going on in this awesome class of awesomeness! ^_^

Today, the students are putting a lot of effort into their Metra project. So far, this class have wonderful ideas and they are looking good. Still, some of the students are doing a little bit of photo research in order to bring their idea to life or whatever. I can't say much about today because today is running slow and it's stupid Monday and no one likes Monday. If you like Monday you have a problem!! This week, our class focused on the Metra Train safety poster contest. It’s a surprise to know that many lose their life each year just because they didn’t take simple precautions. We were asked to show the importance of railway safety through our images, and the principal of emphasize, combined them with the slogan “look, listen, live”. With any project, we started sketching, and researching things like common accidents, and railway safety tips. Our deadline is February 24th, 2010, and winners will be selected form each grade level. Usually, we would supply a picture of work of our own with our posts, but since we’re so hard at work, we’re just going to leave you with the phrase, “look, listen, live”.
- Patricia H.
- Ricardo C.

Sireze Booker

Jared Bailey

Hello Everyone! Please take time to view our final projects on the left side of this post, which of course were done almost completely in Illustrator, occasionally Photoshop. In class we are creating our own individual pieces to show how we feel, how we are affected, or just making a statement about gun violence. We've done alot of research in order to gain a basic understanding of gun violence; where it occurs and what types of gun violence there are. This week we brainstormed using the research we did to come up with ideas for our project and we have begun making those ideas into art.

What is Gun Violence?
Gun violence is the use of a firearm to threaten or inflict violence or harm.

Statistics
Everyday at least 300 people are shot and every year at least 109, 518 people are shot.

30,896 people died from gun violence.

12,791 people murdered.

16,883 people killed themselves.

642 people killed accidentally.

360 killed by police intervention.

220 died but intent was not known.

78,622 people survived gun injuries.

56,626 people injured in an attack.

3,797 people injured in a suicide attempt.

17,215 people shot accidentally.

984 people shot in a police intervention.

Source:
Data: CDC National Center for Injury Prevention and Control, Web-based Injury Statistics Query and Reporting System (2006 (deaths) and 2008 (injuries)), www.cdc.gov/ncipc/wisqars/. Now that we’re done with our concrete poems, we are now working on our new project relating to “gun violence. We did some research about “gun violence” and learned there are many types of “gun violence.” Gun violence comes in different forms such as: Suicide, Crime-Related, Unplanned Deliberate, Planned Deliberate, Planned Undeliberate and Unintentional. Afterwards, we shared our on personal stories relating to “gun violence;” We noticed that a majority of the stories were Crime-Related. Learning this information, we were able to brainstorm ideas for our projects. One thing that is different about this project is we get to make it into t-shirts, posters, brochures, buttons, logos, or etc.

If you want learn more about gun violence then check out these following websites:

http://www.nowpublic.com/chicago_loses_more_black_kids_than_soldiers_in_iraq_to_gun_violence

http://cbs2chicago.com/local/chicago.summer.shootings.2.810166.html

http://crimelab.uchicago.edu/gun_violence/rfloi.shtml

http://www.violencepreventioninstitute.org/gangs.html

http://www.ichv.org/facts-about-gun-violence/general-facts-about-gun-violence/

Hello, this is Tim and Jeff, and we will be the ones who will have the pleasure of giving you this week’s blog. Eric and Erica here for the Graphic Design class. This week we were introduced to the idea of typography. This is a method in which art is created using letters and numbers. Lol XD!!!!! --- Each student in our graphic design class had to create different patterns for each shape shown on our tiles using only special black or red pens to mark our designs. When we started to mount our group piece, we finally figured out that all of our tiles resulted in a giant red ribbon in the center of our designs.

When it was time to show our project to the people and students from gallery on Dec.1st, we basically had the best project in show. I actually made some good patterns I must say and had fun with it. We are now learning about Zentangle which is another art form of doodling to me LOLZ. But its actually interesting because after doing more research on it, I see that alot of artist use different shapes and even make objects out of shapes. We also are doing a project in honor of World AIDs Day(December 1st) and each of us in class received a piece of a poster and we all have to use the form of Zentangle in our artwork. Above are some examples of Zentangle and some pictures of my patterns for your entertainment

Until Next Time!!!!!

Sireze

Patterns V.2

Another week of Galley has gone by with another lesson learned. To start off the week we were introduced, or for some reintroduced, to Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts (PAFA). It seems to be a nice fit for those interested in fine arts. More information can be acquired at www.pafa.org. With the compositional figures we created last week we began to color them in using the live paint bucket tool. When adding color to the compositional figures we used complementary colors, which are colors that lie on the opposite end of the color wheel but when placed next to each other they look brighter. We used the color palettes for reference in terms of what colors are complementary to the other; for example Green-Red, Blue-Yellow, Light Green-Purple. (http://kuler.adobe.com/) We used the figures then to make pattern swatches. When applied to a shape you can see the repetition which creates the pattern. Above us are our examples, the one with pink is done by Anita, and the one with a darker shade of yellow by Jared.

Patterns

Hi, this is Dorotha and Jeanette coming to you from the Graphic Design class at Gallery 37. This week we critiqued each other's city stickers. Then we jumped into a new lesson on learning how to create patterns. It may seem easy but there are many steps that are taken to come up with a cool pattern. Patterns are repetition of images or shapes (organic/geometric). We see patterns in our every day lives, rather it may be on an item of clothing, in our habits, or just looking at a building. We used Illustrator to design a compositional element then tweaked with it to produce our pattern. We started our patterns off with geometric shapes but will soon move into organic shapes.

City Stickers

Hey, blogspot these are your updaters for today, Jeanna and Tim; So instead of a plain worded blog we made a video. Also last week DePaul University stop by for an interest and skills inventory workshop.

Live Painting Experience

The past few days have been mainly focused on learning to color in Illustrator. Skills learned this week utilize basic skills from previous lessons including grouping, live tracing, gradients, and much more. With these basic skills, as a class, we all learned that coloring is a skill with many complexities when it comes to Illustrator.

Furthermore, a project was presented to the class allowing us to take matters into our own hands concerning our personal creativity. The Chicago City Sticker contest happens every year where highschool students from all over the city can complete their own design of the new city sticker based off a theme. This year the theme is Daniel Burnham's Chicago. So far it has been alot of research accompanied by a delightful field trip to the Chicago Architectural Foundation where we were able to analyze a miniature model of the city! (pictured below) The winners of the contest can get up to a $1000 savings bond and not to mention their winning design on over 2 million vehicles in chicago starting in 2010!

Hope everyone had a great week!

Compton & Erica

Negative Shapes

Konnichiwa (good afternoon). My name's Mattea AKA Matt and I'm your updater for today.
Since last week our graphic design class has been working on the negative spaces using shapes. Basically, using Adobe Illustrator we opened a new file and we used rulers to measure a 6x6 square. Then we dragged 2 guides from the left and above to the square. The guides were put in place every 2 inches. So we had 9 small squares within the bigger square.

After setting up the square we began using shapes. Some of the students changed the look of the shape and some just used the pen tool to disfigure the shapes.

Our goal was to have 50% black and 50% white of space within the square.

It was a fun project and I enjoyed it. I did add a little something in the project---just tweaked it a little bit, but i enjoyed my self and, um....OH YEAH!! we had to do up to 10 compositions with different patterns. Yeah and I believe that's all. Kami! I suck at this!! Here are some pics used in the project.

Focusing on the Negative Space

Hi you guys. Ricardo and Patricia here to give you your weekly update of what goes on in our graphic design class. To start off the week, we constructed view finders to help us identify the negative spaces around positive shapes. We had to draw figures around us, cut them out to focus on the negatives areas to finally figure out, they are as important that the positive areas of a picture. Negative spaces help form silhouettes of a figure. For the next day, we stared at chairs through our view finders to again identify negative space until heads began to hurt. So today after picking random objects to draw only their negative spaces on illustrator, we concluded are week with another project with the objective to now balance the negative and positive space within a picture.

A Message From Sireze & Jared

A Message from Sireze!!

Why Hello There!!!

I must say my first 2 weeks of Gallery 37 were interesting. It took me a while for me to get used to leaving my home school (Simeon) and coming to Gallery 37 because I guess you can say after being with all your friends Mon-Fri from 7:35 AM to 2:30PM for the past 3 years can really be hard (well in my opinion of course LOL =)).

The first week was pretty much an introduction to one another and what not. Then we got down to business.... Our VERY first project was to create an animal with any mechanical tool you would like to choose and I chose a woodpecker with a drill (thanks to Ricardo for giving me the idea!!!). We had to first draw the animal from scratch and then scan it to Photoshop and edit it on Illustrator and BAM! your creation is complete!!! You can take a look at it above (mine is called the PeckerDrill).

But I must say now that I’m really enjoying it here. All of this will most definitely pay off in the future. I'm looking forward to making new friends and improving my graphic design skills!!!!

Until next time my fellow readers, DUECES!!!!

Sireze

A Message From Jared

Hi everyone, Jared Bailey at your service~ I have to say starting my graphic design class this year was a great experience for me. Getting here was not a problem, all I had to do was ride the brown line from Armitage to Randolph. Meeting my new teachers and my colorful group of classmates told me that this was going to be a fun and productive year!

During the first 2 weeks here we introduced ourselves to each other, then we started our first assignment where we had to come up with an animal with man-made properties. For example, I did a turtle with instead of a shell I used a house; which is symbolic because that is technically where the turtles' home is (on his back.)

Oh yeah i almost forgot... We are using this program called Adobe Illustrator. Heh... it is not like Photoshop at all.... like seriously, it's a totally different program! xD Lol, but it's not that much different. In a nutshell Illustrator is vector based, meaning that if you were to paint a line, it will be fine and bold, unlike in Photoshop where you can see the pixels. But i know my fellow students and myself will get better with this program with our instructors guiding us. Heh i feel like i got better with the pen tool already and it's only been about 3-4 days that i was taught how to use it.

Thank you for taking the time to reading up on what I have done this week. I am happy to share my art with the world and get comments and constructive critiques.
